Should I Attach a Photo to My Job Application?

Whether or not you should add a photo to your job application depends on a number of factors. Experts have differing opinions on the matter, but it chiefly comes down to your personal preference, the type of job you are applying for and the employer in question. Consider a few potential reasons people use photos in resumes before you decide on adding a photo to your application or resume.

To Show You Fit In

If a potential employer is big on company culture and great customer service, a recent picture of you can help you get in the door. If you are pursuing a position in the media or fashion industries, then adding a photo to your job application allows you to showcase yourself and build an individual brand with employers. From looking at a picture of you, a hiring manager can develop a perception about what kind of personality you have and the type of employee you may be, and those conclusions may be positive or negative. Some hiring managers are compelled enough to contact a candidate that has a good resume after seeing a great photo of them. Some believe that adding a photo makes you vulnerable to discrimination based on your appearance, but companies seeking to diversify their workforce are looking for candidates of all types of ages, backgrounds and genders.

To Show Confidence

Job candidates who add a photo to their application can seem more confident than those who do not, so don't be afraid to let an employer know who you are. In an age where visual content matters more than ever, employers often ask for links to social media profiles because they are interested in what you look like and how you carry yourself. Make sure your photo reflects the personality you want a business to see, preferably one where you are offering a genuine, warm smile. Be dressed in neat, professional attire in the photo you include. Avoid choosing a picture with a puzzled, plain or flirty expression on your face if you expect to be taken seriously.

To Stand out From the Crowd

Chances are most of the resumes that land on the hiring manager's desk likely do not have photos attached to them. If you add a photo to your resume, you will definitely have more hiring managers paying closer attention to your job application. Including an image of yourself places a personalized touch on an otherwise identical sea of applications. Submitting a resume that looks just like all the others can kill your job application.

A hiring manager will meet you anyway and see you in person if you land an interview, but a flattering photo can help you make a good impression before you arrive. Some people can add a photo to their resume and gain an advantage, but others prefer not to do so. If you believe that adding a photo can improve your chances at getting a job, then do so.

This is a well-written piece that lays out a practical case for putting photos of yourself online, and is one of the best Beyond articles I've read. Thanks, Joe.
