One Win Per Day Can Lead to Your Next Construction Job

Posted by

If you are between construction jobs or looking to change employers, it can be frustrating. Frustrating, because most times the job of your dreams just doesn’t fall into your lap. Rather, it takes a lot of trial and error to find the construction job that is right for you. When you stop to think about it, you spend most of your time working and developing your trade skills. Very little thought or effort is made on a regular basis to find a job. Rest assured you are not alone, because most people are good at working at their job but not good at finding one.

When you are looking for a new job or to change jobs, you are bound to run into a lot of dead ends and hear the word “no” many times over. It might seem like a friend or an acquaintance at another construction company might offer a possible connection that could lead to an interview, but after you make several calls, it turns into a dead end. With results like this, it is easy to get frustrated and want to give up. But giving up won’t find you the job that is just right for you.

Here is a formula for finding your dream job. When you use it on a regular basis it will work for you. But like anything else, it won’t work unless you put the time and effort into working it. This formula is called the “One Win Per Day System.”

Here is how it works. At the beginning of each day write out your “to do” list. On that “to do” list, write down all the things you plan on doing and all the activities that will move you closer to finding the job that is right for you.

Things like:
Phone calls and emails to friends who work at a company where I would like work
Search construction job sites
Read job search articles designed to help me find my next job
Update my resume
Network at the local construction association meeting
Talk with my career coach
Review construction association webs sites
Visit the websites of construction companies and study the content listed
Make comments on construction blog sites
Set up one informational interview

By using patience and persistence, and working your to-do-list each day, you are bound to come up with at least one result that will move you closer to the job you really want. This one result is your win for the day. If you are able to get a minimum of five wins per week, you are well on your way to landing the job of your dreams.
