Customer Service Starts at Home

Posted by

Marshall Goldsmith, executive coach, made the point in one of his programs, that customer service begins at home. Far too often we seem to put the major emphasis of our life on our work, yet when we really need someone, it is usually a family member or a close friend who comes to our rescue. It is funny how the people we really value the most are the ones we take for granted. Most of the time we think that they will always be around and there will always be plenty of time later to be with them.

That is, until the hour glass runs out, either for them or us. Then we realize that we have made a terrible mistake. This reminds me of a poem I once heard by the late Kenneth McFarland.

Life’s a bother, life’s a hurry, life’s a busy crowded way, good intentions go astray.
I had a friend the other day, I haven’t anymore he passed away.
I meant to write, to phone, to call. I didn’t do any of those at all.
I only wish he could now see what his friendship meant to me.
Life’s a bother, life’s a hurry, life’s a busy crowded way, good intentions go astray.

The sad part about it is we can’t turn the hour glass over and have the opportunity to bask in the sunshine of their love and friendship from yesterday. But, wait. We still do have time that is remaining. If we start by making our family and close friends a priority in our lives, we can spend some time with them before it it too late. The hour glass is running. So what are you waiting for?
