Job Descriptions: The Center for Foundational and Validity Research is seeking a skilled Research Scientist in the area of domestic English Language Learning and Assessment, especially in the K-12 arena. The area’s mission is to examine the validity and fairness of the assessments ETS creates and the educational contexts in which they are used, to contribute to the development of new types of assessments that support learning, and to investigate validity-related issues of concern in educational measurement. A primary focus of the area is to provide service to the program areas of ETS that serve English Language Learners. In particular, work related to tests, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) and the examination of issues surrounding the assessment of English language proficiency for K-12 students both in the US and in international contexts are handled by the area.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide information and advice to the setting of research goals and priorities.
Generate or contribute to new or modified theories of educational and psychological processes, research methodology and analytic or interpretative procedures.
Develop and contribute to the development of new products or services for education.
Develop proposals for research projects and obtain financial support for new or continuing research activities.
Prepare initial and final proposal and project budgets.
Design and conduct complex scientific studies functioning as an expert in the major facets of the projects; respond as a subject matter expert in presenting the results of acquired knowledge and experience.
Consult and collaborate on problems arising from substantive research and/or testing programs, or corporate management concerns.
Direct and/or participate in the conduct of research projects involving a variety of management skills for staff assignment and scheduling, the monitoring of financial performance and the identification, acquisition and utilization of equipment, facilities and services.
Implement dissemination activities utilizing various methodologies to reach specific audiences.
Disseminate knowledge, particularly the results of activities through the publication of research papers, progress and technical reports, the presentation of seminars or other appropriate communication vehicles.
Promote and maintain professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory or policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators.
Respond to requests initiated by professional colleagues and educators.
May regularly carry out administrative responsibilities related to planning and monitoring research activities in areas of interest to ETS or one of its clients. Required Experience: EDUCATION A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in language testing, language education, cognitive science, psychology, or a related field is required.
EXPERIENCE Three years of progressively independent research experience is necessary. Research experience involving English language assessments for K-12 English language learners in the U.S. is preferred but not required.
