Managing Director
Clubbed Thumb commissions, develops, and produces funny, strange, and provocative new plays by living American writers. Since its founding in 1996, the company has earned four OBIES and presented plays in every form of development, including over 80 full productions. Annual budget: $300,000; staff: 2 full-time staff members, Producing Artistic Director and Managing Director, with additional support provided by 1-2 seasonal part-time positions.
The Managing Director is responsible for the administrative, financial, and marketing activities of the company. S/he collaborates on all fundraising (institutional and individual giving), oversees company management and provides production support as needed. This individual must be extremely well-organized, flexible with good written and oral communication skills and able to work collaboratively. S/he must have an affinity for the company's work and mission, a working knowledge of the new play ecosystem and downtown theater, an affection for artists and the desire to work in a creative / resourceful environment.
Primary Responsibilities include:
General Management: - Prepare and manage annual and project budgets; includes generating regular reports. - Execute day-to-day bookkeeping (reconciliations, accounts receivable and payable, payroll and tax paperwork, etc.) and annual audit prep. - Negotiate all contracts, including union agreements. - Prepare materials for meetings of the Executive Board, including financial and attendance reports, minutes, etc. - Maintain company systems including mailing lists, databases, etc. - Organize volunteers and interns. - Oversee seasonal company manager/line producer and provide production support as needed including arranging auditions, coordinating rehearsal space, organizing opening night events, etc.
Development: - Prepare final reports and oversee grant and reporting schedule. - With Artistic Director, prepare grants and maintain communication with established institutional funders and donors. - With Artistic Director, identify new sources of institutional support and assist in cultivating relationships. - Collaborate on developing content for annual appeals to individual donors and oversee distribution. - Organize annual benefit events.
Marketing: - Oversee Marketing and Communications Associate and the implementation of social networking and audience outreach. - Oversee electronic media including website and email blasts. - Oversee the development and distribution of printed collateral (brochures, etc). - Collaborate with press representative on press releases. - Organize documentation of productions.
