About KIPP LA Schools
KIPP LA Schools is a non-profit organization that operates free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools. Our schools, which serve elementary and middle school students in East and South Los Angeles, are part of the national KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) network of 82 schools in 19 states and DC. KIPP schools are dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life.
KIPP LA's mission is toteach the academic skills, foster the intellectual habits, and cultivate the character traits needed for our students to thrive in high school, college, and life. Through the success of our students, the KIPP LA team and family will serve as a model of excellence and collaborate with others to raise the quality of education in Los Angeles.
KIPP LA's schools feature a "no shortcuts, no excuses" philosophy and a strong culture of achievement. Our curricula are designed to provide students a well-rounded education, with sufficient time dedicated to academics, the arts, enrichment, and physical education. KIPP LA's educators are committed to continually improving their teaching skills, and to giving students the support and motivation they need to excel in school and beyond.
In the 2010-11 school year, KIPP LA will operate five schools - three elementary and two middle schools - and serve over 1,200 students. Our annual consolidated operating budget will be approximately $15.5 million. Over the next decade, KIPP LA will grow to 14 schools serving more than 6,000 students.
About KIPP LA's School Support Center
KIPP LA's School Support Center (SSC), which is located in downtown Los Angeles, provides back office services to our schools. These services include development, operations, marketing, finance, technology, and academic support.
The SSC was founded in 2008 to facilitate KIPP's expansion in Los Angeles and to ensure the quality and sustainability of our schools. The mission of the SSC is tobroaden KIPP's impact in Los Angeles by providing the support and services necessary for our schools to achieve academic excellence and for our organization to maximize the number of students we serve.
Responsibilities
The Corporate & Foundation Relations Manager will be a key member of the Development team, helping to maximize the organization's ability to raise funds from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other major donors in support of the strategic imperatives of KIPP LA.
The Corporate & Foundation Relations Manager will be responsible for the production of high-quality letters of interest, grant proposals, grant reports, and other development communications as needed to help maintain and increase the diversity of KIPP LA's funding portfolio. This person will manage external relationships with institutional funders and will report directly to the Director of Development. Responsibilities include:
* Write grant proposals as well as letters of inquiry, progress reports, and other correspondence to prospective and renewing foundations, corporations, and government agencies
* Research and identify corporate, foundations, and government agencies as sources of funding to support regional imperatives
* Develop annual plan for grant application submission and prioritize pipeline; maintain up-to-date calendar of grant application/report submission deadlines
* Devise engagement, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for prospects, with support of Development Director
* Gather and prepare all materials to accompany grant requests (financial data, bios, required forms, etc.)
* Collaborate with finance team to develop project/program budgets for project-specific grants
* Lead grants management process and hold quarterly meetings with School Leaders and Executive Director to ensure that regional leadership team is apprised of grant application, implementation, and reporting requirements
* Manage proposal archive and maintain accurate database records of institutional funders and prospects
* Prepare monthly activity reports including funding requests, grants, and reporting information for development dashboard
* Cultivate and manage relationships with institutional funders by organizing lunches, site visits, and meetings
* Manage stewardship of existing institutional funders, with support of Development Director
* Gather information for proposals and reports; stay up-to-date on KIPP LA programming and funding needs
* Monitor trends and opportunities for grant development
* Perform other duties as identified by the Director of Development in order to meet team goals
Requirements
* Minimum of three years development experience, including grant writing
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail
* Excellent computer skills, including MS Office, internet and fundraising software; knowledge of Donor2/Talisma or comparable development database preferred
* Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially
* Ability to work with diplomacy and tact at all times
* Ability to gather, analyze, and evaluate a variety of data and information
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, and regulations
* Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
* Self-starter comfortable in an entrepreneurial, start-up environment
* Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with a proven ability to meet and complete multiple deadlines and tasks
* Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and collaborative working style
