The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), founded in 1920, is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with more than 500,000 members and is dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the Constitution. The Communications Department of the ACLUs National office in Washington, D.C. is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Senior Media Relations Associate. OVERVIEW: The ACLU has made an unambiguous and unwavering commitment to the importance of communications as a central and essential element in the success of its mission. The organization places great emphasis on the role of communications in framing the debate on its issues, on its utility in building support, and on its ability to increase the impact of the organizations work. The Senior Media Relations Associate is a member of the Media Relations team of communications professionals based in the ACLU National Office in New York and the Washington Legislative Office in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate must possess in-depth knowledge of the legislative process and how the U.S. Congress and executive branch of government operate. We are seeking candidates who have established professional relationships with journalists and bloggers who cover Capitol Hill, the executive branch and politics in general. Candidates must be exceptionally skilled at pitching and placing stories and have a fine-tuned sense of what sells in the news business. Working knowledge of strategic communications, very strong writing and editing skills, and experience in using public opinion research to frame issues and develop messages also are required. The Senior Media Relations Associate reports to the Director of Media Relations. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Function as the lead media associate responsible for promoting ACLUs legislative program; Work closely with ACLU lobbyists to promote a range of legislative and policy issues including national security, immigration, voting rights, criminal justice reform and reproductive rights; Cultivate relationships with high-profile journalists and other reporters who cover ACLU legislative issues; Collaborate with the media team in New York and Washington to promote the organizations positions on a wide range of issues shared by the Washington Legislative Office and the National Legal Department; Write, proofread and edit press releases and other documents aimed at promoting the ACLUs agenda; Help to develop and implement a creative, proactive media strategy around ACLU legislative issues including managing of events such as press briefings and news conferences related to the Washington Legislative Offices work; Work with other ACLU national and affiliate staff to ensure consistency in messages around ACLU issues and policies; Assist the Director of Media Relations in managing the day-to-day work of a team of media professionals and support staff in NY and Washington when required, including approval of press materials and supervision of Media Relations operations in the Directors absence; Respond promptly to calls from the press and help facilitate the proper response, if any; Work in collaboration with ACLU affiliates around the country to assist with and coordinate messaging and communications strategies; Other duties relating to the work of the ACLU national office as may be required by the Director of Media Relations. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors Degree in a communications related Field required. A minimum of six years professional experience in the field of communications with established professional relationships with journalists and bloggers who cover Capitol Hill, the executive branch and politics in general.
